Thanks, Diane. I'm not as wiggy as I sometimes appear. The OT, as you know, fascinates me. And it is amazing that as we remove some of the filter we as citizens of this age and nation possess, just how much more obvious Israel's unique place in history is. God does not change. And the giving of the law was an act of mercy and grace.

And while the Israelites turned fron God even while He was in their presence, God always displayed more mercy than judgment, faithfully honoring His terms of the covenant even when Israel was in defiance.

When reading about the ten commandments as a summary document, I found another interesting tidbit. Some claim the two commandments given by Christ upon which all the law and the prophets hang to be a summary of the summary. Also to be kept in the "holy of holies" so to speak...the heart of the Christian.

Okay, I now understand what you meant by the Law representing freedom for the children of Israel. Good point, and concisely stated.

However, they couldn't even wait for the terms of their covenant to be written down before they broke it... Gratitude for their deliverance? Funny way of showing it! But then, I never have been able to understand how lightly they esteemed their relationship with God, especially since they had visible proof of His presence with them.

Interesting how the gods of the Egyptians kind-of parallel the plagues visited upon them, isn't it?
