Franklin, TN (August 24, 2006)–Big Idea’s VeggieTales, the most recognized kids faith and values-based property in the U.S., will launch this fall in a regular time slot on NBC, Telemundo and the i network as part of the new qubo programming block. Along with VeggieTales, the programming block will also include Big Idea’s 3-2-1 Penguins! and its 2D Larry Boy Adventures. The launch marks the national television debut for the Big Idea properties, which have sold over 52 million videos since the company began in 1993.
Of course, they’re being sanitized somewhat, and “tailored to meet educational and informational standards for children’s programming.” In other words, that little spot at the end where the veggies share a scripture verse will be edited out. Phil Vischer, VeggieTales creator, says of this opportunity,
“I am very excited for the opportunity to bring Bob, Larry and their veggie friends to national TV.”
Part of me says sort of sarcastically, “I missed that part of the Great Commission.” But on the other hand, Veggie Tales is nothing but entertainment. And really has never strived to be anything else. With or without the scripture verse at the end, Bob and Larry are a lot better than Pokemon and other things I have seen on network television billed as child’s entertainment. And personally, I think the bigger problem is in all the churches using these videos as part of their children’s programs…even with the verse left in.

My kids love ‘em, but I am in agreement with you on the verse at the end thing.
We like VeggieTales, too. And have seen all of the videos, including the Larry the Cucumber cartoon things. I have no issues with them on their own, but for the most part see them on the same level with Caillou and other children’s programming.
It’s entertainment, and well-done at that. I think that because they have that verse, some people put them more in the education category and they do not belong there. IMO.
