I’m not quite sure how I’ve managed it, but I seem to have messed up my 17 month old. She comes to me with her arms up wanting to be picked up and says, “Down! Down!”
No amount of repeating, “Up” is doing any good. She just keeps insisting she wants down.
It started witha the high chair. When she is done, she says, “Down.” Somehow, she has associated the resulting action of being picked up in order to be put down with the word down.
So now what?

Unless you move to Australia–then “up” would be “down” and you’re back in gear.
Maybe you should all start speaking German together…
Go with it. Use her terminology. It won’t last forever and it might be kind of fun when she finally realizes how “wrong” she’s been.
Oh, just enjoy it! You can say up, but don’t correct her, she will figure it out eventually, and then you’ll be sad.
My dd used to call horses “fwee-fwee” and my husband always corrected her, then she stopped saying it….. it was sad. Of course, she IS 15yo, lol. We now just enjoy thier silly words and screw ups, they grow too fast not to.

Scientifically speaking she is correct. We naturally see everything upside down until the image hits the back of the eye and then is corrected to the state in which we view the object.
Therefore the entire world is confused. They believe Australia is Down Under but to be exact Australia is on top:

my son is the same way!! only he is almost 2 (next week). he will figure it out someday, for now we just go up and down or down and up… oh wait, that’s life.
We did more sign language with my oldest…this little dearie only knows how to sign “please.”
But now I wonder, at what point will her brain develop enough to realize that a word cannot be its own opposite? Like, she says down when she’s up and wants down. And she says down when she’s down and wants up.
LOL, around that same age my son would ask, “Thank you? Thank you?” when he wanted something. It made perfect sense from his point of view!
too funny! my oldest (now 11) was famous for waving towards himself and saying “all gone!” when saying goodbye to people until he was about 2!
