Thanks for the link, Judy. I hadn't seen that one in particular, but must have seen the study cited elsewhere because I remember the main points.

Obviously, these conversations make me uncomfortable. Most of the people on that particular front aren't actually advocating doing anything, but that may very well come, perhaps even against their will.

The root of the problem they cite is not religion, but sin. I can't find it, but there was an interesting entry I read awhile back documenting how the so-called religious wars were generally about something else entirely. Religion was just used to defend it.

Unbridled by morality, man is a power-hungry, murderous lot. He will make an appeal to anything to maintain a following.

A while back, a Catholic school was sued (by ACLU, I think) because they displayed a crucifix in their classrooms. The lawyers argued that exposing small children to such brutality was emotional abuse and was irreperably harming them (never mind that the parents applied and PAID for the children to be there!)

So, when are they going to invent that time machine, so we can be sure to never expose our children to something they might reject later on in life?

Amazingly, I've heard of deathbed conversions; I've never heard of deathbed apostasy.

Truly, the dizzying intellect of some of the world's greatest thinkers or not. Can you believe the arrogance?

I am an adult. I have rejected secular humanism because it is my belief that you cannot bestow inherent value on mankind on the basis of evolution. Yet, both my observation of the world and my interaction with the sick and disabled leads me to conclude that man, indeed, is special. A review of history clearly shows that societies that have rejected religion and dehumanized mankind in the process are oppressive.

Great entry!
