I tentatively agree with you, Mama, depending on exactly what you mean about the same results. Looking at homeschoolers as a whole, what you say is true and thus homeschooling should not attract any special attention from regulators. However, for whatever reason, I am sure there are numerous individual cases in which the homeschooled child is not performing on level with the public schooled child.

Of course, who is to say that those children would do any better in the public school system?

France has an interesting system in which children are tested, but they must not be compared to the ps children, but instead look at the "whole child" and how that particular child is progressing. Technically, NE has a similar system, but thus far the DOE has chosen never to implement testing of homeschools. There is a bill before the unicameral right now which outlines such testing, "The results of such testing may be used as evidence that such schools are offering instruction in such basic skills but shall not be used to measure, compare, or evaluate the competency of such schools." (homeschools operate as unaccredited private schools in NE). That is a reasonable approach to homeschool testing, if it must be, but I still object.

The state has no business in my home monitoring my children unless there is already probably cause to believe that a crime is being committed.

I agree with you that education of children is exclusively the parent's domain, and that the parents may choose to delegate to the state.
However, if there must be some sort of accountability, instead of teaching credentials, parents should be required to show the same results (or better) as the public schools (graduation rates, crime stats, test scores, such as proficient, below average, above average.) I don't personally know a single homeschooler who is doing worse than the public schools.
How many of our children drop out, have the police come to our school due to violent threats, or graduate from high school unable read or to add and subtract fractions?

Mama Says
