It's because of the holiday. You either have a life and are out doing Memorial Day weekend type of stuff, or you are sitting around at home pondering the problems of the universe.

You can see which category I fall into.

See, the problem is that they want to take that which no one objects to as a foundation for legislation which we might otherwise object to.

I could argue either way about whether maternity is indeed a social function, but it does not follow that we now need to define child care, health care, etc. as a right.

I agree, Karen.

And I had the same reaction to "primordial." It just isn't a word we usually use to describe anything but that soup.

When they say "fully shared responsibility," I think of a friend I had in Germany. She was born in Cameroon and her father had several wives. He was too busy trying to keep them all happy to worry about his children. He was proud of the number he had, but didn't know them, really.

But how do you enforce that, really. It is traditional in most cultures to have the mother take over the nurturing aspects while the father takes over the economic aspects. How is that not shared? And the only way to combat that, methinks, is to have the mother work and the child in daycare. Dad can't just stay home to catch up on his 50%.

i know the usage was correct but since my boys are so into dinosaurs "primordial" really made me crack up.

this seems so vague. shouldn't they define their idea of "fully shared responsibility for child-rearing by both sexes"? does this mean that we must each do the same things or does it mean that we must each care for the child for the same # of hours? if it's the latter, i'll take 6pm to 6am. hehehe.
