Playing with some homeschool stereotypes

It’s that time of year again. I just dropped off my paperwork for the state, and needed a name for our homeschool. Two years in a row, we have struggled with a name. For first grade, we were simply “Hanley Homeschool.” Last year, you helped me in an online poll to discover a name. There was a nice selection of suggestions, but ultimately, you chose for us The George Bush Institute for the Standardization of Intellectual Output. I even came up with a mission statement. Obviously, that was all in fun (even if I did accidentally turn the paperwork in with an envelope on which I had jotted down all the names. Oops!)

This year we have settled on an actual name for our homeschool. We are the Principled Discovery Academy. My husband’s idea, and I liked it. But we still need a tagline, so I thought (just to be fair) I’d play with some of my favorite homeschool stereotypes:

I am glad you posted this. I know in my state I have until October 15 to submit paperwork, but I want to do it sooner–like before the school year officially starts, so that if the school does call inquiring where my son is I won’t have any worries…but I don’t even know where to begin.

    Guess I better get started!

Also…I just finished a book that kept reiterating that most people have the impression that homeschoolers of the wealthy class and that is so far from what myself and anyone (IRL that doesn’t HS) I have evey talked with about homeschooling has ever thought. So I thought about posting along the same lines as your title here LOL different content.

And I LOVE the school name you chose this year (and last year btw LOLVery gutsy)

Last year’s name was great, however this year’s name does sound more professional. I loved ALL the tags, but with my hunting crew I had to vote for the quiver and shotgun one.

LOL! I nearly choked on my lunch! Too many to choose from. In the end I have to go with taking over :)

    How about….
We know big words and we are not afraid to use them

    This is my favorite…

crafting a world of social misfits, one child at a time

I think I might borrow it.

Many thanks. I’ve never laughed so hard with a mouth full of oatmeal.

  7. Rebecca, August 2, 2007:

    How about “Ceeping peeple dum”?

  8. Dana, August 2, 2007:

Janine, Anonymous and Rebecca, those are great!

Janine, I tried to come up with something based on my old stereotype that y’all were geniuses, but none of them quite worked.

    Thanks, everyone, for playing along!

Goodness, I almost spit out my drink laughing! Those are all great. I had to go with crafting a world of social misfits, one child at a time however.

Dana - you are so funny! Thanks for the laugh this morning!

I had to go for the shotguns loaded one but it was a hard choice!

    BWA HA HA HA HA!!
I voted for crafting a world of social misfits although it was very hard no to vote for quiver full and shotguns loaded!!

    I love it!

I like the social misfits one, because to a certain extent it’s true. Not in a negative way (obviously we want our children to be able to interact with others in an effective manner) but in a positive one. Marching to the beat of a different drum rather than in conformist lockstep with whatever the pop culture deems to be “in”.

There is a chinese saying that goes something like “misleading other’s children” and your “crafting a world of social misfits, one child at a time” fits right into that! :)

  15. Dana, August 5, 2007:

Ooh, Calvin, I like that. Definitely appropriate!

  16. Calvin Warr, August 7, 2007:

OK, Dana, just for you, here it is in the actual Chinese words: ????

This is usually used on “lousy” teachers who cannot teach and thereby leading their students into ruin. But today, it is more commonly used as a joke whenever we hear one of our friends wanting to become a teacher.

  17. Dana, August 7, 2007:

Ok, with the popularity of people wearing Chinese characters and my own personal snarkyness, I want one that would mean the equivalent of “misleading my own children.”

I think that would be a lot of fun.
