I never had any of those. I was always just sent off to do “independent work.” At the time, I took it as a compliment that the curriculum was unable to meet my unique educational needs. It was fun sitting in the library writing my own curriculum and documenting my own progress.

Now I am thinking that maybe my teachers, and especially my history teacher (who gave me the most freedom) were just trying to get rid of me.

Thank you! My first words must be words of gratitude for my ninth grade English teacher, Mrs. Horner. Everyone warned me that she was a tough cookie who required perfect spelling, required that every student master vocabulary by studying root words and tortured unsuspecting youth by making them diagram thousands upon thousands of sentences. She forced me to write well or re-write…
