Heather, I think that is common. And not just in our moms! When something is perceived as normal it is perceived as right. It can be hard to see through our own preconceived notions of a thing...I used to think the same way about homeschooling.

Renae, it is far too early to declare the year a failure. Or are you taking my guide to unhappiness to heart?

Thanks, Stephanie. And there do seem to a few. I suppose it is natural that someone interested in education would be most interested in the education of their own...and we might have a little more confidence to begin given the classroom experience.

Or maybe I just notice it when I come across it because it is something we have in common!

Love this!
I wish I could somehow find the percentage of homeschool parents that were once public school teachers. My husband and I both were, and I know know several others. Interesting...

What a nice list!

My best intentions for this year are failing. Saying to myself, "Bug can read really well," hasn't quite boosted my confidence. If I add these ideas maybe that will help. :)

Oh this is so perfect. I used to have arguments along these lines where in the end my mom (a public school teacher) would finally say that a parent can't keep things in perspective and teach their own kid. This coming from a woman who taught me most of what I learned at home because I couldn't learn it in school and who often taught my classes in school as a sub--and told me then that she always kept things in perspective there. It is funny how the brain tries to work around the truth when it doesn't want to accept it.

Forgive me if your "give" for typographical humor was not intentional, but it was quite good either way. As much as I type lol, I rarely actually do laugh out loud. But I actually did on your correction! : )

LMBO...I loved reading that! What a way to keep it all in prospective. And what great timing for me to read it. I tell you, you have a give for satire, Dana :-)

Homeschooling does seems to have a really low drop out rate. How DO you drop out of homeschool, anyway? Enroll in school?

It is interesting to note that the best, most well rounded, successful schools work very hard at incorporating aspects which imitate a successful home and family, like community involvement or "real life" activities. Things that are naturally present in a healthy home environment are conducive to academic and social success.
