The Arizona Republic published an interesting editorial yesterday taking a look at the problems caused by judges meddling with education and the growing fixation on credentials as a measure of teacher quality.
More people are beginning to recognize that credentials are not an adequate measure of teaching ability. Maybe soon they will realize that parenthood is.
And I wonder what I could do for American education if I had the power to direct funding with other people’s money?

Well, call me Captain Obvious, but it’s always easy to fling around Other People’s Money. Whole Empires have been built on it. It’s another story when it’s not only my kids, but MY MONEY. I don’t have a lot of it, and I want quality material that’s goigng to have the most educational bang for my buck.
Well, I’d need more than just the power of the purse strings in order to fix government-run education. And a lot of the things that really would improve education involve getting parents and students to improve their own behavior & it’s not the government’s place to be doing that (I don’t want to live in a nanny state).
See, that’s the thing. When it is other people’s money, you don’t need to be responsible. At least that seems to be the effect.
And that, of course, is the crux of the problem. But we just throw money at it and pretend like that will fix it.
Who brought these people up? I was taught to be even more careful with other people’s money.
That’s why you never ran for political office. : )
