Introducing Mouse, my eldest:
Often seen downtown during school hours, her favorite haunts are the Y, the zoo and the nature center. Her favorite place is up: up a tree, up on the shed, up on the roof, up on the back of the couch, up on the refrigerator. If she ever figures out how to get her sketch pad up the tree with her without falling off one of the scrawny branches, she might never come down again.
Quite independent and industrious, “no” for her is only the first challenge to find another way. When birthdays and holidays come around, she finds extra chores to earn money to buy presents herself. She is currently getting more intent as she saves money for a trip to Utah with her grandmother. Now when walking through the store, she picks up things she would like and actually could afford then sighs and returns them to the shelf, saying to herself:
I don’t think I should buy anything else except presents until after Utah.
She spent half of what she had saved on a birthday present for her baby sister and begs everyday to be allowed to give it to the baby now rather than on her birthday.
Friendly, chatty and outgoing, she can be a little boisterous and gets lonely if she doesn’t see her friends for a few days. She has made friends with a number of books, including Heidi, Swiss Family Robinson, The Little Princess and Moby Dick. She has long passages memorized, something which seems a particular talent for her. She also memorized Petit Rouge Riding Hood, complete with a Louisiana accent, and loves memorizing her verses for AWANA.
She has three siblings: Bear (five year old brother), Bug (two year old sister) and L. E. Fant (11 month old sister). She gets along with her sisters best, spending hours reading to them, playing dress up with them and entertaining them with her invented games. She gets along with her brother most of the time, but won’t let on about that. He looks up to her a little too much. And thus will not stay out of her things.
When she grows up, she wants to be a veterinarian, or a chef or an artist or a Sparks teacher. And she definitely wants a horse. She isn’t so sure about a husband, and she reminds me so much of me it is a little scary.
Activity:
Make your own wanted poster for each of your children. There is an online version, which allows you to place a photo into an old western style wanted poster. And there is a nice template available from Education World (scroll down to Icebreakers, then click “Wanted Poster.” We do these for character sketches for literature, sometimes.
Profiling Homeschoolers is part of Home Education Week, hosted here at Principled Discovery. Are you sharing a bit about what what homeschooling is like in your family? Leave the link to your post here, and be sure to link to this post to share all the wonderful experiences others have chosen to share with your readers as well. I am looking forward to getting to know you all a little better this week!
The rest of the week’s prompts are listed here, where I will also be archiving these discussions.

Principled Discovery is a place to stop and discuss news and information related to faith, family and particularly education. Pour yourself a cup of tea and join the conversation!

Woo-Hoo! Mine’s up! I am having such fun meeting everyone!
Going to Utah with Grandma sounds like a lot of fun. It will probably be a great learning experience. I know about those “up” girls. We had so much snow this year, that my daughters climbed up on the garage roof and jumped off into the snow.
Hi Dana,
That was really cute (sorry - It’s too late for me to think of a better word than cute).
Your daughter sounds like a lot of fun. She is so sweet to spend all that money on her baby sister. And what a lucky Grandma to get have her for trip to Utah!
Thanks for hosting - this is fun.
Stacy
Great commentary on your sweet girl! My first three kids are all climbers and I can relate to the “up” thing. What a fabulous turnout for the Home Education Week, and I’ll get on board at some point! Thank you so much for doing this.
These prompts sure have me thinking!
I’m glad you all are enjoying the posts! And Jennifer, no pressure, but I am looking forward to your entry you pop in with! You have a wonderful way of storytelling I always enjoy.
Tell Mouse I used to be a SPARKS teacher…and one time I was even Sparky in a parade. Many, many years ago but it was fun. And as a kids I loved AWANAS!!! That’s were I came to know the Lord at age 9.
Dana,
(Loved the Wanted Poster idea!)
First, thanks so much for hosting such great topics!
It was fun getting to know your girl - - thanks for sharing.
Also, thanks for stopping by my site!
thanks for hosting this and visiting my blog
my son wants to be a chef too
bless your daughter
Um, I’m already in Australia so on the days when the only thing to do is move here I’m seriously considering Pern. (Not being a fiction reader you need to know Pern doesn’t actually exsist except in Anne Macaffery’s warped little imagination.) I followed Dispan Dribble over.

Marissa is generous with buying gifts too… usually. It almost killed her to buy Christmas gifts and her dad’s birthday present when she was saving for a Nikon D40. Well, for her birthday, she was just $100 short of her goal (having saved over $400 all by herself), our tax money had just come in and, well, we helped her get her camera.
I wanted to be a veterinarian when I grew up too! Only I wanted to have 12-kids. I drew up floor plans for the house we would live in and named and renamed my children almost daily. I still like floor plan books, only now the houses I look at are smaller, zero-energy homes that will take me off grid ~
Great story! Thanks for doing this!
Watching your kids grow up into the unique persons they will become is fascinating, as, like fingerprints, there are no two alike.
I believe growing up to be a Sparks leader would be an excellent choice!
Blessings from an AWANA Chums leader who now needs to work on her Council Time message for tonight since she has her Home Education Week homework done for the day,

“When she grows up, she wants to be a veterinarian, or a chef or an artist or a Sparks teacher. And she definitely wants a horse.”
WOW, that sounds SO much like my 9 y.o.g. The “first job” she wants is that of veteranarian. After that, look out world!
This sounds like fun, I may join in later!
This is fun. Thanks
Mouse sounds a lot like my Lulu.
Great post, thank for sharing.
Kim
I enjoyed learning more about Mouse! And the picture is great!
It was fun to read about your kids. My oldest would also like to be an AWANA leader, and my youngest has a knack for Scripture memory. Perhaps my older one could be my younger one’s leader.
Thanks for hosting this week’s posts. I’ve enjoyed writing mine.
I enjoyed reading your profiles. Thanks for doing this, I have had fun getting to know new people.
I posted my answer! Loved your profile– the neat thing about homeschooling and homeschoolers is that each definition of “normal” will be very different indeed!
Thank you everyone! I am really looking forward to reading them all, but it probably will be later…my article for Heart of the Matter is due tonight, so I really must finish that before visiting. I’ll get to everyone if it takes me until May.
It is so much fun getting to know everyone!
My oldest does the gift thing too.
She is saving to get her best friend here from Texas next year.
Great post.
This was great. I enjoyed reading about your daughter. My chldren also find it important to spend their money on everyone else for birthdays and stuff. And my son worked for extra money last summer to get his own digital camera.
Blessings,
Laurie
Mouse needs you to hand her her sketch pad AFTER she gets up in the tree! The pic she draws should be one of the best!
wow..there is alot to read..this is awesome!
Dana, btw, I love the picture.
And, you did enough work getting all this together! Take your time reading all of ours, no pressure at all!
What an adorable girl and sweet tribute to her. Being a Sparks teacher is a great goal…I’m our church’s Sparks director! =)
Thanks again! I will have to read these over the next few weeks, but I am so looking forward to peeking in on other homeschoolers’ worlds!
My 9-year-old daughter wants to be a veterinarian too.
I loved the profile of your daughter; she sounds like a wonderful young lady! Thanks again for hosting this; I’m really enjoying it.

I came a bit late to this but thanks for hosting it!
Continuing on. What kind of Nebraskan would I be to not participate in Home Education Week?
Great to read about Mouse. Couldn’t think of ONE of mine to profile, and not enough time to do ALL, so just what’s “normal” for us.
