Connecting on the internet via social bookmarking

I must admit that I don’t quite get social bookmarking. I think it is because I have never really invested enough time in any one of the services out there to really see what it can do. At one time or another, I have signed up for a variety of social bookmarking sites and left most of my accounts dormant. A couple of you seem to have found me, however, as a friend request here and there over the past week has reminded me that these accounts exist.

So I thought I’d give it a try. As if I needed something else to occupy my time.

I am not sure whether y’all are just not all that into social bookmarking or I’m just incompetent being not all that into social bookmarking myself, but I could not find any of you anywhere. Even those of you who I am relatively sure have accounts somewhere. So I’m going to ask for a huge favor. I am going to list my multiple identities here and hope that y’all can find me on the social bookmarking site of your choice.

I would also really appreciate your impromptu reviews of the listed services or any others that you may frequent. Except twitter. No offense to all the twits or tweets or whatever they are. That sounds way to addictive and I’m just not going there. Ever. Not even to check it out. Else you might never see me again.

(Obviously I missed that note about personal branding. I don’t even know why I have a different username everywhere. For that, I’d have to know what I was thinking way back when I set it up. And I don’t even know what I was thinking ten minutes ago when I started composing this post.)

GOPHub: danahanley

del.icio.us: gottsegnet

sk*rt: gottsegnet

I know there are a couple more at least, but I don’t even remember what they are, much less what I used as a username or password.

Like how could I forget these two?

I like the idea of social bookmarking…of sifting through similarly minded people and finding what they think is interesting. But I usually don’t think about it. And then it takes too much time to fill in the little forms. That is why I like StumbleUpon so much. I downloaded the del.icio.us toolbar last night so if my husband leaves it, I may find I like it. Then I don’t have to worry about my browser crashing and taking my bookmarks with it!

I don’t get it either. I’m signed up for a number of places, but it seems like too big an investment of time for too little return. I “meet” enough people through blogging.

HATE, HATE, HATE Facebook. Love Twitter ;P and Stumbleupon. Not on the others–too much is enough. Twitter I don’t use as a social thing, I use it as a quick way to note things going on through the day, especially for the kids and work, and if someone reads y feed good for them.:) Stumbleupon I also do not use as a social thing but as a means to find good sites. Found some great ones through there. And being Stumbled myself was about the scariest thing that ever happened to me–too many trolls on Stumbleupon.

I can’t ever remember those passwords, either.

I just don’t use those things. I can’t seem to manage my time well enough to be able to investigate them, much less use them.

I use del.ici.ous. and love it. I’ve always kept my bookmarks on my computer but losing them really changes your perspective. Del.ici.ous makes it super easy to bookmark something since they have that toolbar. It has proven a wonderful resource for what “folks” are thinking about. It also has made it easy for my friends and family to access, “hey you know that website you mentioned 2 weeks ago…” I’m LesserRoadAcademy on del.ici.ous. Good luck making a decision. I didn’t even realize so many social bookmarking sites were out there. LOL.

I became addicted to Scrabulous on Facebook and like it as a means of getting back in touch with people I lost contact with. And it’s fun. I’ll add you as a Friend.

  6. Computer Articles, May 10, 2008:

I am about to look into this social networking thingamy and think I might start with stumble and del.icio.us. I will let you know how I get on.

  7. Shawna, May 10, 2008:

I have no idea what social book marking is LOL I usually stick with the few blogs I have encountered and felt a connection with and occasionally venture to a new one through those… but I tend to be selective and keep my list very short.

The only one I ever really use anymore is StumbleUpon, I’m lillake.stumbleupon.com I’m just too disorganized for anything else. LOL Other than that I use Twitter all day, which isn’t bookmarking but very social for picking the brains of like-minded souls. twitter.com/summerm

Am durff on delicious. my network is for:durff I find delicious intuitive to use. our webcast, It’s Elementary, uses Diigo and i think i’m on that too, though bookmarks should be updating on both. Using delicious means i am never without a bookmark. Using the firefox extension makes it easy to post a link to delicious. Twitter is not social bookmarking but a social network.

  10. Renae, May 10, 2008:

I just started using Twitter. It kind of reminds me of twit or twinkie, which I may turn into if I don’t start exercising. :P It is kind of fun, but that may wear off soon. Oh, but I wasn’t supposed to write about it. Sorry. ;)

I do like delicious a lot, so I hope you can use it. I’m sure your bookmarks are interesting. I check my network there a lot more the StumbleUpon.

My husband just gave up with all my Firefox additions. He has one computer set the way he likes it and I can’t change it. Fair compromise.

And Heather, I’m sorry to scare you. I’ve stumbled a couple of your posts. I don’t go to Facebook much either, but it has been a good way for friends to find me.

  11. Renae, May 10, 2008:

P.S. Daisy marks great sites on delicious. ;)

  12. Dana, May 10, 2008:

Mrsdurff, shows just how much I know about all that stuff. :) I’ve never even gone to the twitter homepage and I think I’ll keep it that way.

    Etiquette question:

When you bookmark on delicious, do you normally notify everyone, selected people or no one? I don’t want to annoy y’all with every link I bookmark, but then if that is what is expected when someone joins your network, I don’t want to not send out the little links, either.

  13. Dana, May 10, 2008:

And how do you find people? There has to be a better way since it took me five whole minutes to find mrsdurff. Five minutes!

  14. Renae, May 10, 2008:

I just add people if I see the links while visiting blogs. Another thing I’ve done is to scan other people’s networks for familiar names.

I am no Ann Landers, but I usually share all my links, unless it is personal or local or something like that. People only see your links if they choose to, so I don’t think it annoys anyone. At least, I think that’s how it works.

  15. Dana, May 10, 2008:

That is kind of what I thought, Renae. No one has ever sent me any links, so I was wondering. Not that I have that great of a number of people in my network. Having close to zero activity will do that to you.

  16. Rusty Lopez, May 10, 2008:

As near as I can tell, Facebook’s primary purpose is to give you the ability to tell all your “friends” what you happen to be doing now (e.g., twittering away, im happy, going shopping, tired, etc.).

The main reason I signed up for it is because I want to be aware of what my kids will be getting into when they “come of age”.

  17. Dana, May 10, 2008:

Yeah…I don’t get that one especially. But a couple of people I know in real life love it so I joined just because, I guess.

  18. ChristineMM, May 11, 2008:

Funny I have been thinking about social bookmarking too and it is not very much for me. The main reason is I have no time for that. Living my life, home educating my kids, volunteering my time and blogging pretty much take up all of my time.

I have a theory that the very active social bookmarking people, for them, that is ‘their online thing’. Not all of them are active bloggers. Not all of them are volunteers. Not all of them are working at a job or doing something not for money like home educating their own children that takes up their time and doesn’t allow for lots of web surfing and online social networking. I also suspect some are working full time but may have jobs that let them surf the web and do that stuff while on the company’s time! There are a lot of jokes out there about what people are doing instead of working at their job (i.e. watching silly You Tube videos).

Occasionally if I read a great article that I’d like others to see I will “digg it” on digg.com. HOwever I am so surprised when I’m on the site to see how many people seem to digg so many articles or spend time reading the stuff that others have “dugg”–the most popular articles etc.

On YouTube I watch some videos if someone points me to a good one or a really funny one, or if I am looking for do it yourself information. However I have no time for socializing with others like some in the YouTube community do. Some on there have a friend list and chat about this and that with each other.

I think we all must have our priorities in order and we have to do what is right for each of us, not just go with the flow and follow the trends that others are following “just because everyone else is doing it”.

For me I have my life to live and then I blog. I can’t spend any more time publicizing my blog, trying to drive traffic to it, developing an online social networking stuff etc. I need more time to stay in touch my local friends and have no more time to make new online friendships. KWIM?

The web offers us so many services and opportunities for learning things, for enriching our lives, for twaddle entertainment and for chit-chatty socializing. We have to decide how to spend our time most wisely.

If others enjoy it, good for them. It is just not for me.

Dana I assume you are already pretty busy living life and doing your blogging. It is okay to not do everything that seem to be the ‘in thing’ to do. Really it is okay.

When we choose not to get very involved in EVERYTHING it doesn’t mean we are missing out on something because our lives may be very rich and full already. To not get into everything is not an indication that a person is necessarily “missing out”.

    Happy Mother’s Day.

You are right, Christine. :) I don’t quite get most of the social bookmarking sites and why they are such a big thing. But I do like StumbleUpon. And I think I like delicious…mostly because I have lost all my bookmarks a couple of times in the recent past and that is annoying!

  20. Beth, May 11, 2008:

I joined Facebook primarily so I can keep up with my older kids, two of whom live away from home. They share photos, etc. on there. I hadn’t even heard of most of the other services you mentioned!

  21. Dana, May 11, 2008:

I know about them mostly from my brief stint as a paid “professional” blogger with 451Press. I played around with them back then while going through the training stuff, but most of them weren’t very applicable to birding blogs.

I don’t have the time to really get involved enough in anything like that for it to be of any use to me or anyone else. But I do like SU and I think I’m liking delicious. :)

  22. Julie, May 12, 2008:

Dana, I haven’t gotten into social networking that much. I opened an account on Shoutlife where I am, well, acceptancewithjoy, people added me to their friend’s list (that was nice), but the communication seems a little superficial and, uh, pointless for the lack of a better word.

    I much prefer my blog.

That’s why I keep a social bookmark — I think it’s great for keeping my bookmarks. Just like you, I’ve lost my bookmarks and that *IS* very annoying, I agree! I guess I can’t call mine “social” because I keep it private. I deleted the two I originally had because I couldn’t figure out how to keep them from going through my site feed. I want to check into some of the ones mentioned above.

    Blessings!
