Home School Talk launches today/open thread

In preparation for launching Home School Talk (at 1PM CST TODAY!), I spent some time listening to a variety of talk shows to see what I liked, what I didn’t like and to try to figure out a basic format for my own show. In the process, I realized that the one thing that frustrates me most about talk radio is that when the host strikes upon an interesting topic, I want to know more than the shared quote and the host’s reaction to it. I want the whole news story, the whole research paper, the rest of the story.

So I decided to make that information easily available to the listeners of my show through a weekly newsletter.  I set it up and had the subscription information here earlier.  But now their servers are overloaded, and I’m thinking of going back to the original plan of posting the information here each Monday.

Despite technical difficulties, the show aired at 1 PM today and is now available to listen to.  You can click on the player here in my sidebar or visit the show’s homepage to listen.  I was greeted with no Internet connection this morning, and the kind attendant in India walked my husband through it, isolating the problem to the modem.  We were able to get the Internet working, but of course it crashed fifteen minutes before the show and it took my husband a bit to get it working again.  My nervousness turned to panic, but “the show must go on” as they say.  I was able to talk to Terri for a short while before she had to leave to go teach her class on the First Amendment at the library, and I did eventually catch my breath after a moment of not having any idea of what I should say since what I had planned obviously wasn’t going to happen.  I will post the show notes here later today or possibly tonight for anyone interested.

Please consider this an open thread to share any thoughts you have on the show, homeschooling and how we can best advocate for homeschooling. If something discussed reminded you of a post you already read (or wrote), feel free to leave the link. I always welcome topical addition of links to further the discussion.

It’s probably a feature of Blog Talk Radio, but I love the fact that I can be reminded that the shows about to come on :)
    Thanks. Can’t wait.

I listen to a podcast show on scouting that puts show notes onto their internet page. I like this approach, because when I discovered the show, I listened to several months worth on iTunes and was able to still get the links for the show notes.
You might consider a forum or blog page for the show with a thread for each show or topic within the show.

Sebastian, I have considered devoting a category to the show here and may yet. The above service actually archives newsletters, but is experiencing server overload at the moment. We’ll see. I’m new at this and trying to figure out the best way to go about it. Thank you for the suggestion!

Hi, Dana! A good start, despite technical difficulties! I’ll tune in next week…

I, That Pesky Guy in the Background, apologize for the technical difficulties experienced in todays show. This side of the equation is my responsibility.

After planning and configuring then completing the installs for a better talk radio experience, unfortunately, our hardware and software did not coexist peacefully.

Due to ongoing hardware issues the Internet Company is sending a new modem. On the software side there has been some issues with our choice of product that may or may not play into this scenario.

We are striving to provide a radio show that is of quality, and kindly ask, please grow with us.

Quite true! And I’m glad you enjoyed the show. Hopefully it only gets better with time, has less technical difficulties and as I relax enough to handle those things without seriously thinking about hanging up on my own show!
