I just got back from a craft fair at Olathe North High School here in Kansas.  They had a great sign hanging in the commons that I am sure reflects the kind of serious academic values every educator seeks to instill in students:

Join Powderpuff

Get out of art!

I suppose they know their audience, but is that really the kind of message you want to send students?

Yeah. Because high school art class is so intensive.

LOL You haven’t been hanging out in the hallways BEFORE they cleaned up for the craft fair. Worse out there.

HEY, and if you stop near Kansas City you should say howdy to me next time if I’m not too far out of your way.

    Well, howdy, then!

My high school had a policy that students who were on any of the varsity sports teams were exempt from the PE requirement. I had several friends who joined relatively non-strenuous sports like golf or cheerleading (this was NOT the acrobatic kind but the traditional pom-pom waving) for precisely that reason. It always annoyed me that the competitive figure skating I did growing up didn’t count when it gave me quite a bit more of a workout than cheerleading would’ve.
