December 1, Venus, Jupiter and the crescent moon converged for a one time display of cosmic dissatisfaction as the evening sky appeared to be frowning down upon us. The light here is obscuring the frown a bit, but it was pretty clear while I was taking the picture.

Things looked a little different down under where the scene was inverted and Australia got an evening smiley face. Europe got a more Picasso-esque effect as the moon was shoved between the “eyes.”
So why do you think the heavens would be frowning down upon us here in the United States? Is News.com.au, an Australian news source, right when it says,
And perhaps it should tell Americans being frowned upon to have a long, hard look at themselves…?
Feel free to share your thoughts or your captions. Did you get to see the event? (And a bit more information for those more scientifically inclined.)

VERY true
Can’t believe I missed it….maybe tomorrow?
I don’t think they are lining up tomorrow, but I’m not sure. Worth taking a look, anyway. And it is nice to show the kids Venus and Jupiter long before bedtime, anyway.
We saw that too… but I didn’t think it looked like a frown until you showed me Australia’s. How very cool!
(SAD) Superstitious Aussie Douchebags… And the Earth is the center of the Universe too matey.
We saw that too here in CT – my daughter made a point of dragging me outside to see the celestial show..
it was very cool…
): LOL
Saw that when hubby and I ran an errand. Gorgeous. Here in KC the sky couldn’t have been clearer or the view better.
My son was acting up before we had to leave the house for basketball practice. As we were going out the door, I said to him, “I’m disappointed with you right now.” I looked up in the sky, and it just came to me, “Look, even the moon is disappointed with you.”
The look on his face was priceless.
I DID see that when I got home last night. Thought it was interesting. Didn’t know it was a rare event. And certainly didn’t catch the “frowny face.” (I suspect that’s less of a scientific observation and more of an artist’s catch.) Oh, and, no, it won’t happen on the 2nd. Venus and Jupiter will be close, but the crescent moon will be much farther away.
We did see it last night. It scared my dd for some reason. But the boys thought that it was cool. I meant to go back out and take a picture. I just forgot.
Yes, the smiley/frown is a bit more of a human addition to the celestial event.
But it did look rather like a frown in our sky. The light from the crescent w/ the lengthened exposure just sort of made the crescent moon look more rounded.
I think I read that it will be repeated in five years.
I totally missed that. Looks way cool though.

Aussie Kim dragged us out of Girl Scouts to look at it. I should have known it was some Australian conspiracy!
Yes, those Aussies are a sneaky bunch. Hubby had to point out to me that the heavens were smiling upon his native land while we were admiring it in our backyard.
Sorry you missed it, Luke. But Venus and Jupiter will be around a tad longer.
My boys were amazed. however, our pics didn’t come out. We will not be able to view again until the year 2013.
Have a great week!

Sorry you pictures didn’t turn out. I was really surprised our did. Maybe I found my camera’s talent because this turned out better than most of the pictures I’ve taken of the children recently!
How cool you got a picture! Love it! It was gorgeous.
