No crafts in school?! It shouldn't surprise me, but it somehow just seems very wrong. And that sounds like a very special Mother's Day. They make up the menu and my DH supervises. The kids do the cooking. This year my 11 YO improvised/improved the belgian waffle recipe. Everything is from scratch except this year one son begged for hash browns, frozen from the grocery store (had them at a Boy Scout campout, we don't buy that kind of food). The boys used to make me a card but last year and this year I got a store bought one they picked out at the store with my DH. I don't get any of those crafty things either, that schools make. Although I will say that when I was in public school it was as you describe but in my town now the focus is on academics and the state standardized testing so elem kids and even Kindergarteners don't make so much of that any more. They are too busy doing work to make crafts. The art they make is structured like copying the style of Van Gogh or being directed that everyone has to paint a tiger and they are told how to do it. I think I am quite a bit like Renae’s mom – I keep a good supplies of craft idea books and supplies around.
But, my problem is that I have a horrible time not taking over the crafts when the kids are not making them the way I think they should be made. Drives me nuts, so I have learned to back off and let them create on their own accord. I am always amazed at what they come up with and produce on their own! ( :
