497. While surrounding school districts were starting back to school, we were heading off to visit my parents.
498. While students were still sorting out new classroom procedures and class schedules, we were sharing a water park with thirty other families.
499. While everyone else is in the midst of review, we’re just beginning a new unit…with no need of review, because I know exactly where each of my young scholars is.
And it doesn’t hurt that I’m writing this from a hotel room in South Dakota as we get ready to start our unit on Ancient Egypt at the Tutankhamun exhibit at the Goss’ Opera House. For 330 miles, we listened to The History of Egypt, Chaldea, Syria, Babylonia, and Assyria which we downloaded from Librivox, figured out where we were in our atlas, and listened as my daughter continually estimated how many miles to the next town (she got pretty good by the time we hit South Dakota). Oh. And mom’s knowledge of the capitals of states along the eastern seaboard was less than impressive. And I emphasize was. Now that Mouse has managed to reteach me the fifty states and their capitals, I hope she is up for the challenge.
I think I’ll quiz her for the next 330 miles. Fair is fair.

These are great reasons to be envious of home schooled kids and families. Thanks for sharing these experiences.

My son got up at three in the morning to thank me for this trip. All we had done of it was drive for five hours. I think he must have liked stopping at rest areas, or something!
What a fantastic trip! We took a big trip in May and I really regretted that I didn’t have the kids navigate for me as we did when I was a kid. And we learned that lots of schools do trips in May, but none in September. You sure picked the right time to go.
I LOVE September, but I sure do feel sorry for all the kids stuck in school.
Also, I love that these are your reasons 497-499 – that’s a lot of reasons to love homeschooling, and I feel the same way about it!
LOL We did the west coast this May, British Columbia to California, three weeks. The kids do have a unique appreciation for rest stops. Anything that’s out of the ordinary scope is magical-seeming, apparently. Travel is so much more fun with them.
It makes things like maps and geography actually real, doesn’t it? And topography. They’ve been building topographical mock-ups of the Cascade Range in the sandbox ever since we got back.
From the link above by RightBrainedLearner.com, I completed this test:

The results:
Left Brain – 45 percent
Right Brain – 55 percent
No wonder I can’t make up my mind. It’s too close to call

Very funny, I like it.
Wonderful!! All great reasons. The trip sounds so fun – I wish I was stowed away in your trunk.
Thanks so much for linking up to Shoot the Breeze and have a great time with your family!
